How to Adjust Suspenders – Proper Fit for Suspenders

Buying a stylish pair of suspenders is the first step in creating snappier outfits. But if your suspenders don’t fit correctly, you won’t achieve the fashionable look you’re going for. At SuspenderStore, we want to make sure you get the very best results when you wear this handsome accessory. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide for how to adjust your suspenders properly. Learn about the right way to wear suspenders with these fashion tips and tricks.

Suspender Length

When buying suspenders, you want to make sure you get the right length. Whether you’re shopping for men’s, women’s or kids’ suspenders, the measurement you see listed will be for the full length of the suspenders from tip to tip when they are fully extended. While the suspenders can’t go any longer than this measurement, they can be shortened by using the buckle, slide or clamp adjuster on the front straps. Adjust the straps so that they are taut enough to stay in place without putting too much pressure on your shoulders or back. Make sure you can comfortably bend down and sit in the suspenders as well.

When shortening suspenders, the question often arises as to where the suspender adjuster should ideally fall. This is a matter of preference; it is perfectly acceptable to have the adjuster fall anywhere from just above the waistband to high on the chest. If the adjuster falls just above the waistband when you shorten the suspenders and you would prefer them to be higher on the chest, simply purchase the next larger size.

Suspender Attachments

Don’t forget that where you place the suspender attachments on your pants is just as important as adjusting the straps to the proper length. While the location for placing button suspenders is predetermined by where the buttons are sewn on your pants, you need to make sure clip-on suspenders and belt clip suspenders are placed correctly each time you put them on. If you have a single back strap (or Y-back suspenders), make sure it is properly centered. Double back straps (or X-back suspenders) should be placed evenly between the side seams and the center. Likewise, the front straps should each be centered between the side seams and the fly. Ideally, you want your front straps to sit exactly perpendicular to the floor. Use these tips to make sure you look polished and stylish whenever you wear your suspenders.
