Tips & Tricks for Suspender Accessories
Even though suspenders can be worn alone, sometimes they call for a little bit of accessorizing. Just like wearing suspenders doesn’t have to be hard, neither does dressing them up. Read on for tips using pocket squares and lapel flowers, sock garters, shirt stays, and where you can get replacement buttons and leather strips.
Pocket Squares
The addition of a pocket square instantly lets people know that you pay attention to details and form. Quite literally a square of fabric tucked into the pocket of a suit jacket, the pocket square hails from a time where one would use it to dab away a sneeze or offer assistance to a lady. These days, their fashion worth is nothing to sneeze at. We love the look of the crisp color of taupe against a navy blue suit, for example. In the fashion world, you’re left out if you are NOT wearing a square. They are what finishes off the perfect suit! And, truthfully, it doesn’t hurt to have one on hand if you really do need to dab away a sneeze, but we would highly suggest saving that act for a clean handkerchief tucked in an inside jacket pocket.
Lapel Flowers
You can’t always go around with a fresh flower tucked in your lapel, although it would be nice. For many special occasions, a crêpe lapel flower can fit the bill, bringing a fashionable not to a formal or professional ensemble. Just like with the pocket square, we love this taupe lapel flower paired with a navy blue suit. Taupe is arguably the most neutral of all neutral colors, so it will go with just about anything, making it quite the versatile little trinket.
Sock Garters
Slouchy socks are fine for the weekend around the house, but definitely not for the boardroom. Look and feel your best when you are pressed to the nines! Sock garters slip around the top of your calf, then attach to the top of your socks, ensuring a straight, secure fit. Before elastic, socks were often held up this way. Honor those fashionable men who came before you and keep it classic.
Shirt Stays
Shirt stays, also known as shirt garters, darn near guarantee a perfect tuck every time. Borrowed from military uniforms that always require precise lines and a clean, pressed look, shirt stays keep your shirt, well, staying where you want it. Simply attach the elastic straps to the bottom of your shirt and let garters dangle down the sides of your legs. Clip them to the top of your socks, and sit and stand a few times to find the right length you need for good, secure tension during all forms of movement. Pull on your pants, and you are tucked and ready to go!
