Style Guide: What to Wear to a Summer Polo Match
A polo match is the perfect forum for wearing suspenders. They’re just trendy enough to fit the slightly eccentric yet fashion-forward decorum of the event’s atmosphere.
While the dress code for a polo match is usually "smart-casual", attendees aim to be both comfortable and stylish. According to menswear designer Dom Bagnatoof in an interview with ExecutiveStyle.com, polo spectators should focus on accessorizing when planning their attire. "Colourful shoes, colourful belts, things that really make you stand out - that's what is important. A beautiful pocket square if you're wearing a jacket, an appropriate bow tie. You want as many parts of 'colour pop' as you can add to your outfit."
What a perfect opportunity to showcase your suspender panache whether you are serving on the wait staff, lounging on the lawn or hobnobbing in an executive box! In the spirit of good sportsmanship, we’ve come up with a few ways that you can incorporate suspenders into your polo look without risking standing out for the wrong reasons.
Working With Pastels
Pastels are a popular choice for polo match attendees. They are the perfect color palette for a warm summery day. Regardless of the colors you choose, pairing pastels with tan, beige, brown and sand colored suspenders is a winning combination. If you’re more of a risk-taker, consider bright white suspenders with metal clips.
Sticking to a Classic
While lighter colors are definitely more commonly worn at polo matches, there aren’t any hard and fast rules about what you can and can’t wear. In general though, sticking to lighter colors will serve you well. When you’re going with a more formal or traditional outfit, you might find yourself wondering how you can brighten up your look for an outdoor event. Suspenders can give you an opportunity to experiment with a slightly off-beat fashion trend without overdoing it. In this case, go for solid black suspenders or solid navy suspenders. Pair them with your best formal wear, but skip the jacket. If you feel the look is a touch too formal, roll up your sleeves. Who doesn’t love a nicely rolled sleeve?
Adding a Pop of Color
These days a polo match can be an excellent excuse to go all out fashion-wise. To make an entrance fellow match attendees are sure to notice, throw on neon suspenders in orange, yellow, or even lime green. A tasteful printed button up shirt with properly tailored slacks can complete the ensemble to create a fun spin on traditional polo wear.
